New choices for code readers installed on load ports
Conventional code readers have limited options and high costs
Users need various devices to ensure accurate object traceability - a code reader is just one such device. Recently, we have seen a variety of reader types for different application, such as more compact code readers and 2D code readers. Even so, options for code readers that can be used for load ports on semiconductor manufacturing equipment are still relatively limited.
For these load ports, the appropriate installation location for the code reader is specified in the SEMI E15.1 standard. These specifications are very narrow, putting the code reader at a lower height than the actual code it needs to read. As a result, code reading is only possible if the reader is compact and able to reliably scan from below at an angle. Not many conventional code readers are able to achieve this.
Reduce space and costs with a high-performance compact code reader
The standard design for code readers installed on load ports had limited installation flexibility. Users needed to purchase additional parts to adjust the code reading angle, and then spend time setting up the reader in the correct position.
Reducing the total cost of this arrangement has also been a concern for equipment load port designers in the semiconductor manufacturing industry.
In response, IDEC introduced the WB2F 2D code reader. It was capable of reliably reading codes at an angle, and compact with dimension of 24mm x 40mm x 32mm. The WB2F was equipped with a high resolution 1.2 megapixel CMOS image scanner, which could read small symbols over a wide area.
The code reader also featured an auto-tuning function to reduce overall adjustment time, and an image storage function that reduced the amount of work required in the event of a read error. This enabled users to enjoy strong traceability while keeping their costs low.
