Automated power transfer switches for precise fan motor control

Precise speed and timing constraints make power source transfers difficult
In larger buildings and warehouses, including data centers, cooling is ensured with a fan wall configuration. These fans require consistent power – as do the servers, and every other device in the data center. This means that, in practice, the power source for fans and other equipment may change during operation.
A HVAC manufacturer specializing in industrial and data center applications in the US needed a true open transfer switch for their air rotation system solutions. As they were an existing IDEC customer for other products, such as our relays, we used quick communication to put together an effective solution. This saved the manufacturer considerable time, and the resulting system is highly reliable during power switches.
Data center fan control is essential to maintain temperatures, airflow, and efficiency
For the specific fan motor arrangement in question, power source switches can only be carried out when the centrifugal fans are slowed or stopped. Optimal fan speeds support effective airflows and efficient energy consumption during standard operations, and reduce strain on the motor during data center power transfers.
Time was also a factor – the customer had looked at alternatives, but struggled to find a full solution from a single supplier with all equipment in stock.
Connected HMIs and purpose-made programs result in customized control systems for smooth power switching
Our solution combined the IDEC Fl1F SmartRelay and the HG1G operator interface. We also supported creation of the relay and HMI programs needed for end users to run a power transfer switch system.
As we provided all devices and components, which were all in stock locally and available immediately, the customer was able to implement this new system with no delays.
The system ensures that power is only transferred after the fans have stopped. This helps to protect the fans and motors against wear, and reduces the risk of power-related issues during use.

IDEC’s diverse solutions have proven practicality in data center applications
Together, the FL1F and HG1G give operators highly effective control over fan wall cooling systems and power settings. End users benefit from strong network connectivity, varied functionality, and easily understandable displays on compact devices.
The customer’s existing trust in IDEC was boosted by our understanding of the specific problems they faced in this application. Our sales team had the specialist knowledge and ability to offer a full, tailored solution without delay.
