What is 'simple apparatus'?
'Simple apparatus' is an electrical component (or combination of components) of simple construction, with well-defined electrical parameters, that is compatible with the intrinsic safety of the circuit in which it is used. A device that will neither generate nor store more than 1.5 V, 0.1 A and 25 mW.
Examples include: switches, thermocouples (TCs), light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and resistance temperature devices (RTDs).
Simple apparatus should be used with certified IS barriers in IS circuits, but does not require Ex certification. IDEC’s Non-Ex switches can be used as simple apparatus in hazardous areas in combination with the EB3 barrier series.
IDEC’s switches and lamps for simple apparatus
Our non-illuminated push button switches and selector switches can be used as simple apparatus in combination with the EB3C relay barrier. In addition, various devices from our emergency stop switch and safety switch lineups can be used as machinery safety switches in combination with the EB3N safety relay barrier.
Pilot lights, illuminated push button switches, selector switches, and buzzers*
These can be used as simple apparatus in combination with the EB3C relay barrier and the EB3L lamp barrier.
* The EB3P-ZUN buzzer is not simple apparatus and is Ex certified. Please refer to the EB3L catalog for details.

The customer's problem
In many cases, users need to make their own confirmations that the combination of switches and IS barrier complies with safety standards and can be used as simple apparatus. This is because most manufacturers do not offer both barriers and switches, and the information they can provide to customers is limited to "please use this product with compatible switches/barriers".
IDEC's solution
As a manufacturer of both switches and barriers, IDEC issues the declaration of conformity for simple apparatus to remove user concerns about the certification required for switches and about which combination of switches and IS barrier can be used.
The declarations of conformity below clarify which IDEC switches can be used as simple apparatus in combination with IDEC EB3 barriers.
