HVAC monitoring for data center building management systems

For large-scale data center operators, monitoring multiple facilities is a constant challenge
Modern data centers rely on accurate HVAC monitoring and environmental control to maintain reliable operations and protect mission-critical equipment.
A leading data center developer and operator in Asia required a robust control solution to monitor HVAC performance and environmental conditions across its facilities. Working closely with a Building Management System (BMS) integrator, IDEC provided a PLC-based solution that improved reliability, simplified commissioning, and enabled scalable HVAC monitoring.
Distributed control systems should cover all bases, without delays
The data center operator needed a controller to serve as part of the BMS for monitoring HVAC equipment in data centers. The application required reliable PID control to monitor temperature, humidity, equipment status, alarms, and overall HVAC system performance.
The solution also needed to support distributed remote I/O for monitoring sensors throughout the facility, while maintaining fast, dependable communication. The customer had experienced communication reliability issues with conventional Modbus TCP-based remote I/O systems and was looking for a more stable, cost-effective alternative.
In addition to the technical requirements, they valued a supplier that could provide strong engineering support and collaborate with their BMS integration partner.
The ideal combination of PLC and I/O modules supports connectivity, device communication, and data collection
The customer implemented the IDEC FC6A MicroSmart PLC with the EXM1M, EXM1S, and EXM2 remote I/O expansion modules. This combination became the core of their HVAC monitoring system. The FC6A was installed within the BMS, to perform PID control while collecting data from remote sensors located throughout the data center.
This distributed I/O architecture provides reliable monitoring of temperature, humidity, equipment status, and alarm conditions, enabling operators to maintain optimal server room environments. Compared with conventional Modbus TCP-based remote I/O solutions, IDEC’s system delivered on faster communication, improved reliability, simplified implementation, and a competitive overall cost.

IDEC – a data center solutions provider you can depend on
By deploying the FC6A PLC and remote I/O solution, the customer created a reliable and scalable HVAC monitoring platform for its data centers. As IDEC worked closely with the BMS integrator on the project, we established ourselves as a trusted solutions partner.
The final result was a dependable control system that met the customer’s technical requirements – and can support future expansion across new data center projects.
