In recognition of the United Nations’ “International Day of Persons with Disabilities” (December 3), IDEC held a “Physical Disability Experience Session” on December 24, with the support of the Social Welfare Council of Yodogawa Ward, Osaka City, where our headquarters is located.

This initiative aims to deepen understanding of the challenges faced by people with disabilities in daily life and in the workplace, and to provide an opportunity to consider how we can create an environment where everyone can work comfortably.

During the sessions, participants experienced simulated situations that reflect the difficulties encountered by individuals with physical disabilities in everyday life and at work. A total of 20 employees took part in the program.

Activities

Wheelchair Experience

Using a wheelchair and practicing self-propelled movement

Lower Limb Mobility Impairment Experience

Wearing a support brace that restricts joint movement and simulating stair climbing with limited leg mobility

Visual Impairment Experience

Wearing an eye mask to block visual information and performing daily tasks:
- Pouring water from a bottle into a glass
- Identifying and handling banknotes and coins to make a payment

Through these experiences, participants realized how small steps, narrow passageways, and differences in eye level can create significant barriers, how limited mobility can greatly restrict movement and choices, and how the absence of visual information can lead to inconvenience.

The session highlighted the importance of recognizing that the type and degree of disability require different forms of support and consideration, and of paying attention to each individual’s situation to imagine and determine what accommodations are necessary.

IDEC will continue to promote an inclusive workplace where every employee understands diverse perspectives and values, and where everyone can work comfortably and demonstrate their full potential.
