This design enables operation in 3 positions (OFF-ON-OFF)
By using the natural tendencies of a person in distress, this design keeps the operator safe. As illustrated below, applying light pressure on the button turns the contacts from the OFF position to the ON position, but applying additional pressure turns the contacts from ON to OFF. Also if the button is released, the contacts then return to the original position while the OFF state is maintained.
Conforming to IEC-60947-5-5, as with emergency stop switches, Position #3 (OFF) has a forced contact opening function to shut the circuit off in case of emergency. Only Position #2 (ON) and Position #1 (OFF) are normally used. If an operator, facing an emergency, panics and lets go of the switch (Position #1) or squeezes the switch with excess force (Position #3) the machine comes to an immediate stop. If the operator calms down and releases the switch, the machine stays OFF during the time the position shifts from #3 (OFF) to #1 (ON). This keeps the machine from re-starting until it is safe to do so.
